Mi Nuevo Juguete/My Newest Toy

Entre Facebook, Twitter, trabajo, ejercicio y más trabajo el tiempo no me da para mucho más. Por ende cuando mis amistades y algunos seguidores de Twitter me sugirieron abrir una cuenta en otra red social, los ignoré con determinación. ¡Imposible añadir otra ‘cosa’ mas a mi lista de quehaceres! Era un definitivo ‘no.’

Durante mi visita a San Francisco este fin de semana tuve una revelación. Una de mis metas era tomar fotos y capturar momentos únicos de esta mágica ciudad. Pero se me olvidó un pequeño detalle, llevar mi cámara. 

Con mi teléfono tendría que resolver.

Así fue que comencé a utilizar la tan solicitada aplicación ‘Instagram.’ Ahora no solo añado ‘Instagram’ a mi lista de cosas que verificar y mantener al día, si no que me encanta ver las fotos de mis amistades y compartir las mías. ¡Ah! ¡Y ahora me creo toda una fotógrafa profesional!

A través de este medio me expreso y comunico con mis amistades y seguidores de una manera creativa y diferente. Utilizo esta aplicación como una extensión más de mi creatividad, opinión y manera de entretener. 

Y aunque me lo creo, definitivamente aún no puedo añadir ‘fotógrafa’ a mi currículo. Pero no hay duda de que me gozo este proceso en donde me expreso libremente mientras guardo hermosos e imborrables recuerdos.

Between Facebook, Twitter, work, exercise and more work sometimes I feel like I don’t have time for much else. So when friends and Twitter followers suggested I open an account with yet another social media site, I completely ignored them. It’d be impossible to add yet another ‘thing’ to do to my ‘to do’ list! It was an easy, definite ‘no.’

During my visit to San Francisco this past weekend I had an eye opener experience. One of my intentions during my trip was to capture unique things and moments that resemble the magic of this city. But I forgot a small detail, my camera.

I’d have to just do with my phone.

That’s how I started using the popular phone app ‘Instagram.’ Now not only is ‘Instagram’ another ‘thing’ I do, but I get great pleasure by checking out the pictures my friends have posted and sharing mine with them. Oh, and I’ve quickly convinced myself that I’m the ultimate photographer! (Ha!)

Through this outlet I can creatively communicate and express myself with my friends and followers. I utilize this application as an extension of my creativity, opinion and ways to entertain.

And even though I swear I have a ‘great eye’, I still can’t add photography to my resumé. But no doubt I really enjoy this process in which I can freely express myself while creating and keeping beautiful and unforgettable memories.

El Calor de la Amistad/The Warmth of Friendship

Estoy en un avión desde Miami destino Los Angeles. Me entregan una ‘tableta’ con una variada selección de películas. Desde drama, comedia, acción, clásicos y animación las opciones son ilimitadas. Estoy por escoger entre ‘The Iron Lady’ con Meryl Streep, ‘The Descendants’ con George Clooney o ‘The Tree of Life’ con Brad Pitt. Sin embargo hasta yo misma me sorprendo cuando opto por ‘St Elmo’s Fire’ protagonizada por una muy joven Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez entre otros. Indudablemente es un ícono de la década de los ’80. 

He visto esta película varias veces en mi vida y cada vez me gusta mas. De una manera simple y real esta historia narra las altas y bajas de un diverso grupo de siete amigos que luego de graduarse de la universidad, enfrentan la cruda realidad de la vida adulta. Todos son jóvenes con inseguridades y dilemas diferentes, pero universales. No importa la grandeza del problema, todos salen airosos…gracias a su amistad.

Con vulnerabilidad y simpleza ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ me recuerda la importancia de tener un sólido y buen grupo de amigos. Amigos que te brindan soporte, confianza, amor, comprensión y ayuda cuando más lo necesitas.

No importa la grandeza o la fuerza del fuego, no hay nada que una buena amistad no pueda apagar.

I’m on a plane from Miami to Los Angeles. They hand me a ‘tablet’ which contains a wide variety of films. From drama, comedy, action, classic and animation the options are limitless. I’m choosing between ‘The Iron Lady’ with Meryl Streep, ‘The Descendants’ with George Clooney or ‘The Tree of Life’ with Brad Pitt. I surprise myself when I end up choosing ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ starting a young Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez and many more. Undoubtedly it’s an iconic ’80’s film.

I’ve seen this movie many times before and every time I watch it, I like it more. In a very simple yet realistic way this story narrates the ups and downs of a diverse group of seven friends who, straight out of college, are forced to face the harshness of real, adult life. They are all young kids with insecurities and different, yet universal dilemmas. No matter the turmoil, they all pull through thanks to their friendship.

With a unique vulnerability and simpleness ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ reminds me of the importance of having a solid, great group of friends. Friends who give you support, confidence, love, understanding and help when you most need it.

No matter how big or fierce the fire is, there’s nothing friendship can’t cool off.

Seremos muchos los latinos que vivimos en los Estados Unidos, pero son pocas las páginas de internet de entretenimiento que se enfocan en nosotros y lo que nos gusta. En esta página podrás encontrar lo mejor de la cultura pop pero en nuestro nuevo ‘idioma’, Spanglish. There might be many of us latinos living in the United States, but I gotta say, there are very few internet pages dedicated to the entertainment world that cater to us. I was pleased to recently discover a new entertainment site that really focuses on latinos and what we like. It’s called www.entertainmentaffair.com and it was created by latinos for latinos. Here you will find the most interesting, varied and up to date entertainment news.

The site was launched in Los Angeles and it is managed by the fun puertorrican Raúl Gaztambide. Believe me when I say that if there is anyone that knows everything about entertainment, it’s Raúl! 

Delivering the best of pop culture in Spanglish the website features entertainment news with artists from the latino and other markets. It covers everything in the areas of television, movies, style and music. It even has ‘Pili’s Pick!’ there. Wup, wup!

La semana pasada les hablé de Miami, ciudad que conozco tan bien como la palma de mi mano. Hoy les escribo desde una ciudad que nunca había visitado, pero que siempre me intrigaba conocer: Austin, Texas.

Lo poco que conocía de esta ciudad era que el festival de música SXSW se llevaba acabo en ella y que la misma posee un fuerte movimiento de música en vivo. Amante de la música al fin, solo eso me daba ganas de visitarla.

Pues aquí estoy y les puedo decir que me he llevado gran sorpresa. Resulta que Austin es lo que imaginaba y más. ¡Es una GRAN ciudad! Tiene cultura, carácter, música en vivo literalmente en cada esquina todos los días de la semana, moda, arte, variedad de comida y la gente es súper simpática. Lo que dicen sobre el ‘comfort’ sureño en mi experiencia, ha sido muy cierto. Con sus ‘y’all’ y botas de vaquero, los tejanos de Austin junto con la gran vibra de esta ciudad se han robado mi corazón.

Espero regresar muy, muy pronto…Yeeeehaw!!!!!

Last week I shared my views on a city I know way too well, Miami. Today I write from a city that I had never visited before, but was always curious to know: Austin, Texas.

The little I knew about this town was that the music festival SXSW took place here and that it had a great live music scene. A music lover myself, only that made me want to visit.

So, here I am completely taken aback. Turns out Austin is what I imagined it to be and more. It’s a GREAT city! It has culture, character, live music in literally every corner every day of the week! It has fashion, art, great cuisine and the people are super nice. The whole southern comfort has really stood out. With there ‘y’all’ and cute cowboy boots Austin texans, along with the great vibe this town has, have stolen my heart.

I hope to comeback very, very soon…Yeeeehaw!!!!!!

Welcome to Miami!…¡Bienvenido a Miami!

Los saludo desde la ‘ciudad del sol’, Miami. Esta divertida ciudad es pura energía, sabor, fiesta y alegría. Crecí jugando tenis los veranos en esta ciudad al sur de la Florida, pues mi papa trabajaba mucho aquí y le era conveniente traer a la familia de veraniego. ¡Así que para estar más que claros, conozco esta ciudad antes que Mr. 305 y Will Smith cantaran sobre ella!

Tantos años de visitarla, la conozco muy, muy bien. Pero no hay duda de que en los últimos quince años la misma ha dado unos drásticos cambios. Desde la arquitectura moderna hasta las mini-minis usadas por todas las chicas, Miami se ha convertido en la capital de la sensualidad, el centro de la gente linda y el lugar ‘it’ para la vida nocturna. 

Pero mucho antes de ser la ciudad mas ‘hot’ (¡En todo el sentido de la palabra!) de los Estados Unidos, Miami era fea, aburrida, con poca cultura internacional (excepto por la inyección latina traída por los Cubanos) y South Beach era una ciudad de viejitos. Así es, el ‘hot spot’ de South Beach o mejor conocida como ‘la playa’ estaba llena de hogares para ancianos y era habitada por personas retiradas. 

El omnipresente Britto, el renovado Lincoln Road, el electrizante Ultra Music Festival, el reconocido Art Basel y esa mágica mezcla de culturas es algo relativamente nuevo para Miami. Estos son solo algunos ejemplos de artistas, eventos y acontecimientos que han revolucionado la ciudad. ¡Ya de fea no tiene nada y de aburrida menos!

Ahora los dejo que me toca explorar aún más y …

Warm hello from the ‘sun city’, Miami. This entertaining city is pure energy, ‘sabor’, party and happiness. I grew up playing tennis in Miami because my dad used to work a lot here so he would bring the family to spend the summer in this south Florida city. Therefore, just to be clear, I knew this city way before Mr. 305 and Will Smith sang about it! 

So many years of visiting Miami, I’ve gotten to know the city very, very well. But this is a whole different city than what it used to be fifteen years ago. Some drastic changes have happened that have transformed this town. From its modern architecture to the mini-minis fashioned by all the chicas, Miami is now the capital of sensuality, the center of beautiful people and the ‘it’ place for nightlife.

But way before this became the ‘hottest’ (In every sense of the word!) city in the US, Miami was ugly, boring, with hardly any international culture (except for the Cubans and the awesomeness they brought!) and South Beach was an old peoples city. Yup! The hot spot of South Beach, better known as ‘the beach’ was full of senior living housing and retirees.

The omnipresent Britto, the renovated Lincoln Road, the electrifying Ultra Music Fest, the world recognized Art Basel and the magical mix of cultures is fairly new to Miami. These are only a few examples of artists, events and happenings that have revolutionized the city. It is now far from ugly and sooooo not boring!

That said, time to go now so I can explore more and…

El Poder de mi Súper Nariz/ My Super Nose Powers

Yo huelo todo- voluntariamente e involuntariamente. Me guste o no, puedo oler cualquier cosa a una milla de distancia. Estoy muy clara de que de mis cinco sentidos, el más desarrollado es el olfato. Tengo una habilidad muy particular y precisa de oler. Lo que a unos le toma tres minutos en oler, yo huelo de inmediato. No recuerdo si esto es algo que siempre he logrado hacer o si es algo relativamente nuevo que se ha desarrollado con la edad, pero es una distinción que me gusta mucho de mi. Me parece una característica curiosa.

La misma tienes sus pros y en ciertas ocasiones -usa tu imaginación- sus contras. 

En varias ocasiones mi nariz me ha salvado la vida. Por ejemplo, una vez me salvó de quemarme mientras cocinada una tortilla española en el horno que se prendió en fuego mientras yo estaba en mi habitación esperando que se cocinara. Otra vez, olí un escape de gas.

Gracias a este don, también pude lograr la mejor venganza contra mi vecina de abajo. ¡Buuujuuuuaaa! La ‘poca simpática’ señora le encantaba llamar a la policía si yo tenía invitados en mi apartamento o escuchaba música pasadas las 10pm un sábado. Pero al ella no conocer los poderes de mi súper nariz y olvidarse que en el condado donde vivimos, fumar cigarrillos fuera de tu propiedad es ilegal, el momento de pagarlas llego. Ella es fumadora y fuma fuera de su puerta. Un día, antes de que el fuerte y horrible olor a cigarrillo penetrara mi apartamento, ya mi naricita lo había registrado y con gusto le llamo a la policía. Desde entonces respiro aire limpio y la policía no me visita.

Los contras de tener el olfato muy desarrollado es que olores como axilas sin desodorante o colonia muy fuerte me causan un dolor de cabeza y nauseas, ya que la intensidad del olor es aún más intensa para mi que para otras personas.

¡Ya sabes, la próxima vez que te vea, espero vengas con desodorante y un rico y suave perfume!

I can smell everything- voluntarily or involuntarily. Whether I like it or not, I can smell anything a mile awhile. Out of my five senses, smell is by far the most developed. I have a very particular and precise ability to smell. It takes most people three minutes to smell something I smelled immediately. I can’t particularly remember if it’s always been like this or if I developed this sense with time, but what I do know is that it’s something that I like a lot about myself. I find it to be an intriguing distinction.

This ‘talent’ has it’s pros and in some occasions- use your imagination- its cons. In some situations my nose has saved my life. For example, it saved me from burning down my apartment when I left an unattended Spanish tortilla cooking in the oven and it went up in flames. Another time, I smelled a gas escape.

My nose has also helped me perform a great act of revenge against my neighbor downstairs- buuuujuuuuaaa! This unfriendly woman loved to call the cops on me if I had people over or if I played music after 10pm on a Saturday. Since she was not aware of my super nose powers and apparently forgot that it is illegal to smoke cigarettes outside your property in our county, I smelled pay back. 

One day, before the strong and horrible smell of cigarettes invaded my apartment, my nose had already registered the smell and with a smile I called the cops on her. Since then, I breath in clean air and no more cops drop by.

The cons of having such a developed sense is that smells like body odor and nasty cologne give me a headache and nausea, because the intensity of smell is even more intense for me than it is for other people.

Thus, you’ve been warned. Next time I see you I hope you are wearing plenty of deodorant and wearing some nice, subtle perfume!
