COACHELLA 2014 Do’s & Dont’s

image

As I go through my post- Coachella blues and envy (in the best of ways!) those who will be attending this next weekend, I reminisce on another incredible three day weekend of great music, good friends and a lot of dancing.

image

Oh how I envy those of you going in two days!!!! My joy is over, yours is about to begin.

However, my love for all those crazy music loving, dancing maniac Coachella attendees like myself is bigger than my jealousy. So here I share my Coachella 2014 learnings.

image

DO NOT:
…go see Outkast. They were boring. Like, really boring.

…miss the Arcade Fire. A-FREAKING-MAZING! I had the privilege of seeing the legendary Debbie Harry on stage with them. I really hope you get that “gift” as well.

…go unprepared for the weather. I learned my lesson the hard way. Friday and Sunday nights were perfect. However cold winds and a sand storm wanted to partake on the Coachella fun on Saturday and almost ruined my experience. I was cold, a bit miserable and covered in black dust. Nothing a lot of dancing couldn’t fix. But you do not need to go through my pain and miss bands that you wanted to see- like The Pet Shop Boys in my case- for lack of preparation. Bring a light coat and scarf. You’ll thank me later.

…be scared to venture out. If you’re with friends that don’t want to see a band you do want to check out, go by yourself. As long as you all set up a meeting point and time, I promise you will not get lost.

…be one of those girls with half her “nalgas” sticking out of her too short shorts. I complained about it last year and do so again. It is NOT attractive for anyone. If if your butt looks like Giselle Bündchen’s.

DOs:
..get there before 3:30pm. Daylight is the best time to enjoy the festival grounds, admire the cool art work out and listen to music while the sun sets.

image

…venture out to the YUMA tent. It’s for electronic music lovers like myself, but its really like entering a new- and very intense- world. Go dance and refresh yourself for about :20 minutes. It’s the only air conditioned tent.

…make new friends, dance with strangers. Its Coachella. Everyone is happy!

…call Gabriel. The coolest driver in Coachella. He’ll pick you off and drop you off as close as he can to the grounds. Well worth it. Call him. Tell him his new boricua friend Pili recommended him. (760) 899-2894

…go see something new! I highly recommend going to see Zoé, the ONLY latin band that played this year in Coachella. They are tight. Really, really good. Remember- MUSIC IS THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE. No need to know español to appreciate real talent. (http://zoetheband.com/)

…hydrate yourself. Even when you don’t feel thirsty. Drink H2O.

Bands I recommend:
-The Knife, The Naked and Famous, MGMT, Holy Ghost, Dark Side, The Pixies, Empire of the Sun, Capital Cities, Beck, Chvrches, Broken Bells, Bonobo, Chromeo, Guy Gerber, Holy Ghost!, Little Dragon, Zoé, Arcade Fire

Have a blast and be safe!

Starbucks Noches Culturales: Periko & Jessi León

The sounds of Miami were celebrated once again at Starbucks Noches Culturales, this time with the latin-pop duo Periko and Jessi León.
This was our final night of our seven Starbucks in-store, acoustic sessions focusing on uniting our community, highlighting local musicians and sampling the espresso beverage, the Caramel Flan Latte which was inspired by the famous flan dessert.
The sense of community was felt throughout the night and Periko and Jessi Leon’s performance really added joy, laughter and warmth to this incredible event.
In case you haven’t heard about this Miami based duo, Peruvian born Periko and Argentinian born Jessi Leon have been making waves for the past year. Periko recently won a nomination to a Latin Grammy while their single “Me Vuelvo Loco” has driven many fans crazy over their music. Their artistry and professionalism shined at Noches Culturales!
Like one of the guests said: “Two things people love: coffee and music.” Who could ask for anything more!
This tour of Noches Culturales, as we say in Spanish, “¡Cerró con broche de oro!” (Closed with a golden pin!)

Welcome to Miami! ¡Bienvenido a Miami!

Final stop of our five city Starbucks Noches Culturales tour. With the warmth that distinguishes this fun city, we set up for a night of latin sounds, community and a walk down memory lane with the Caramel Flan Latte- Starbucks espresso beverage inspired by that yummy dessert that reminds us of the flan our mother’s and abuelita’s used to cook.
In this party town, a Tuesday evening is for dancing and laughter and that’s precisely what we did with the latin fusion sounds of Miami’s local band, Elastic Bond. Family, friends and fans came together to see this popular Miami quartet play in an intimate setting, very different from the festival and bigger stages they are used to playing.
That’s one of the many beauties of Starbucks Noches Culturales, we really get to experience an in-store, semi-acoustic, intimate concert with rising, amazing musicians. That closeness and warmth makes these events unique. As a host, I truly feel joy at watching our guests dance, make new friends, converse, enjoy a rico cafecito and just let go.

Check out Elastic Bond’s performance and catch a glimpse of our visit to Miami- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGlgUUrlGJQ&feature=youtu.be

Welcome to Miami! !Bienvenido a Miami!

Gio Chamba: Memorable Starbucks “Noches Culturales”

Two weeks ago I had the privilege of meeting the nice people of Houston, Texas. On our fifth Starbucks Noches Culturales, local musician Gio Chamba was scheduled to play. Little did I know that he’d totally rock our world!
At a packed Starbucks and with the most positive energy, over 70 people enjoyed samples of the new Caramel Flan Latte while getting to know more about their local star. During our interview, Gio shared how he went from playing the drums at a punk band to a solo career as a feel-good, one-love, guitar-playing singer. He’s openness and constant laughter filled the room with smiles: “I love life, I love every one of you! I’m a hugger, so please come hug me after the show!” he kept saying during our :20 minute chat.
How could that comment not make everyone smile!!!!????
He definitely set up the room for what was next: PURE JOY!
Inviting everyone to come closer and dance next to him, Gio picked up his guitar and a great thing happened- every single guest inside the Starbucks began to bob their heads and move their feet. It was such a beautiful spectacle!
So much joy and fun was experienced during this night, but above all, Houstonians felt proud to have their local artist as the star of Starbucks Noches Culturales.
